Choosing a Content Management System

Jul 1 2009

Most content management systems (CMS) can be grouped into two categories, those which focus on the popular social media of blogging and those that are broader in scope. The good news is that many of the most popular content management systems are open source and thus there is no fee associated with utilizing these systems in the construction of your web site. Many of the systems allow web developers the ability to customize the system to meet the needs of their client.

Choosing the right content management system depends on your needs. Work with your web developer to determine your needs and compare and contrast the various content management systems that will work best for you. Wikipedia lists numerous Content Management Systems available. Outlined below are four popular open source content management systems.

WordPress

WordPress(www.wordpress.org) is one of the most popular blogging CMSs. WordPress has many ready to use templates. Many of the templates or themes can be customized to meet your needs. If one of the themes does not meet your needs, your web developer has the ability to create a completely customized theme matching your brand and image. WordPress has support for a larger number of plug-ins (widgets) to help further customize and add additional functions. The administrative interface is user friendly. Many websites can be developed utilizing WordPress. Because WordPress is focused on blogging there is limited support for e-commerce, forums, mailing lists to name a few. YODEL ANECDOTAL is an example of a site built on WordPress.

Drupal

Drupal (www.drupal.org), originally developed as a bulletin board system in 2001, has grown into the most popular CMS. It is a powerful open source content management system. It is highly scalable and supports many modules or plug-ins suitable for web sites such as e-commerce, forums, mailing list managers etc.. Its administrative interface can be confusing to new users. Spread Fire Fox, Yahoo Research, Amnesty International and The White House are examples of websites built on Drupal.

Joomla

Joomla (www.joomla.org) a rival to Drupal and has a larger number or add-ons. Many of the add-ons are commercial which adds to the expense of constructing the site. The code and layouts can be difficult to customize. The administrative interface is excellent. Senior Net is an example of a website built on Joomla.

MediaWiki

MediaWiki (www.mediawiki.org) is the content management system from which the popular site Wikipedia is built on. MediaWiki is not ideal for all websites. It difficult to code and customize. It doesn't have as many extensions or plug-ins as other popular CMSs. The Mono Project site is another example of a website built on MediaWki.
